UPDATE ON MLSA

For Mascoma Lake Skating enthusiasts

From the Board of the Mascoma Lake Skating Association,

sharing an update for all.

Many of you have asked… Where are the skate trails on Mascoma Lake? If Lake Morey can do it, why not on Mascoma Lake?

Very sadly, our trails have not been plowed again this year because we cannot find a new plow person! We have been searching for a replacement for our plow-guy-extraordinaire Ben Prime for two years with no luck.  As most are aware, mother nature for the past two years has made our lake ice “un-skatable”. This year, however, when ice has had great potential, we are still without a plow person in place. We have offered payment, mentoring, training for ice plowing, and a team of support… but no takers.

We are quite envious of the Lake Morey folks finding a solution in partnership with the Town of Fairlee.  We have not been able to find a partner, public or private. At this juncture, without a plow person or partner, we will most likely have to close our non-profit organization and donate our funds from all our wonderful supporters to a group with similar mission and non-profit status.

If you are someone who wants to become a local hero and clear our 3-5 miles of trails for all of New England fame and fun, please contact us at: MascomaLakeSkating@gmail.com.

Ice Safety is Everyone's Responsibility.  Please review Ice Safety Video above and be prepared when on the ice!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Skaters Role in Determining Ice Safety

  • Similar to all other recreational activities on Mascoma Lake, skating is at the public's own risk.

  • Conditions on Mascoma Lake can change quickly; ice thickness, can go from safe to unsafe overnight.  We, the MLSA and the people providing plowing services, will not be monitoring, inspecting or testing ice thickness on a regular basis.  Therefore, skaters must evaluate ice safety for themselves.

  • DO NOT EVER SKATE NEAR OR UNDER THE BRIDGE.  THIS ICE IS LESS THICK THERE AND NEVER CONSIDERED TO BE SAFE TO SKATE OR WALK ON.

  • The MLSA is a community funded and volunteer run group.  We clear areas of Mascoma Lake for skating with our goal to provide skating areas for families, free skating, pond hockey and Nordic trails.  Please refer to ice safety charts for details and guidelines.
